Pokemon Go Anniversary Event 2017: Here Are All The Major Pokemon Parties You Shouldn’t Miss, Is It Time For Mewtwo?

The Pokemon GO Anniversary Event is almost here and as expected, it’s big. While the game won’t be a year old until July, Niantic Labs is kicking off the celebration as early as next week. What’s more is that the parties will not be limited in-game because there will be real-life Pokémon Go Festivals as well! To keep you updated, here’s a roundup of the events you shouldn’t miss.

Solstice Event – June 13 (in-game)

To start things off, Pokemon GO is hosting a Solstice Event that will take place in the game on June 13. It’ll feature higher spawn rate for Fire-type and Ice-type pokémon, increased XP bonuses for accurate Poké Ball throws, and Lucky Egg discounts in the shop. Niantic hasn’t announced what time exactly the event starts, but previous events have typically commenced at 1:00 P.M. PDT. The end date hasn’t been specified either, but TeamEevolution’s leak indicates the Solstice Event will last until June 20.

The publisher will also release a new update soon that focuses on “collaborative group gameplay” which hints at a “new way” to play the game. This will temporarily shut down in-game gyms for a short period of time. This could very well be the update that’s introducing raids. We’ll have to wait and see.

Pokémon GO Fest Chicago – July 22 (in-person)

Staying true to Pokémon GO‘s gameplay, there will also be Pokémon GO Fest Chicago to celebrate one year of catching ’em all. This first ever live event urges players to go outside and visit downtown Chicago’s Grant Park on July 22 to join various Pokémon-themed activities. Tickets for the event will go on sale from the festival website beginning June 19 at 10:00 A.M. PDT. Unfortunately, pricing and schedule are currently unavailable, so it’s unclear what will actually go down at the festival.

Pokemon GO Global Celebrations – June to September 2017 (in-person)

Can’t make it to Chicago? Don’t worry, Niantic is also planning to hold events in several other cities across North America, in partnership with the Knight Foundation, a nonprofit focused on fostering informed and engaged communities. The game maker first partnered with the organization last month as part of a multiyear commitment to promoting civic engagement together.

For trainers in Europe, they can look forward to Pokémon GO celebrations hosted across the continent starting this month through September in partnership with Unibail-Rodamco shopping centers. Of course, Japan will have one too, with a “Pikachu Outbreak” event in Yokohama, where participants are promised a “unique Pokemon Go experience.”

What about the Legendary Event?

There’s a popular theory that the in-person events, especially the one in Chicago, could be the Legendary one that Niantic has long promised. The company has outright said at this point that the missing Pokemon are coming this summer, and the anniversary coincides this timeframe. Plus, the trailer had teased players would battle it out against the Legendary Pokemon like Mewtwo in landmarks during events.

But Forbes notes it would be unfair to limit the release of Legendary to specific major cities or landmarks. It’s also “flat-out impossible” to implement hundreds of events for the Legendaries’ arrival. The most likely thing to happen in the Chicago fest would be a promotion for the long-awaited Legendary update.

If Niantic does end up releasing them during the event, it could follow a similar pattern from Pokemon Shuffle, making them available for a limited time. Players will then battle it out to see who gets the best score. The top players are going to get the Legendary Pokemon while the rest are going to get items. We can only keep our fingers crossed.
